Asian-style Fiesta

The roster headed by the Midgard stars Niti and Augustyn, with the Smoking Cat veterans represented by Dashinchilen’s Fenho and Padre; Zhaf planned a grand return among the elite in a new shirt. Her transfer to the once highly successful, now long-defunct Cork McEima was the event of the winter transfer window. Lucka came too, along with Siisa, superb over recent seasons; defending champion Bloody Mary ultimately played outside the points.

The first round very quickly weeded out the newcomer Czermi, his teammate Bloody Mary and Paul, who reached the edge of the Word on a 0% record, so his final 54.55% is actually a small miracle. The other three players, though, clung on tooth and nail, and table 2 eventually even filled the maximum of 27 games. The last letter here went to Zhaf, who lasted twelve games on the edge of the Word (on the edge / on the brink / hanging by a thread / whatever you like). Just a moment earlier Auntie Cat had bowed out, undone by PPPs (pre-play penalties). Table 1 played “only” 22 games and the last one eliminated was Lucka. Standing out from a fairly even set of success rates were Niti at 93.75% and Blanche at 88.24%.

The final thus seated Niti and Blanche in the best spots, with Augustyn and Siisa behind them and, surprisingly, two Mongolian heroes, Fenho and Padre. Their twin presence in the final was already a huge sensation, and even after the sixteenth game Padre was actually in the lead. Niti, on the other hand, started very poorly, but held on for 7 games at the edge of the Word (E!) and takes an almost traditional silver—her sixth in her career. Fenho, by contrast, played the very first final of his life, so bronze is an enormous success for him.

And finally the winner. Blanche showed last year already what talent had emerged in Vietnam, and that the reputation of a brilliant player that preceded her was not the least bit exaggerated. She dominated the final utterly uncompromisingly, set a personal best of over 88%, and after last year’s silver reached her first career title—for herself and for Burning Cards.

Left without points were Paul von Reichenberg and the newcomer Czermi, who has yet to climb over the 50% success threshold.

The National series of tournaments is behind us. The best performance of the season so far is Jooki’s 89.19% from Copo do Monteiro. Will we see a ninety-something this year?

The season continues with the Team Championship. So far neither the venue nor the number of teams that will compete for three sets of medals is known. The club standings, though, are tremendously even for now.
