White Mountain Hurricane

This tournament had its little hiccup too, but otherwise the spectators—above all those from the islands—witnessed the extraordinary card play of the narrow world elite.

The tournament favourites were primarily both Czech teams, KK Bílá Hora (SC White Mountain) and Royal SCC Vinohrady. Alongside them, representatives of clubs from Mongolia, Portugal, the United States and Canada also took to the tables.

And it was Canada that was the dark horse of the tournament. This year the brilliant Maczka, Niti and Augustyn, backed by their faithful fan, set out to catch the favourites off guard.

The second question mark was meant to be the form of the San Diego Padres, who, since their return to the elite, have so far been falling short of their former successes.

The tournament’s topic was the legendary television series ’Allo ’Allo! And the less fortunate received badges with Nazis in the group rounds of the tournament.

Herr FLICK = Mr. Flick

The 1st round followed the spirit of the Californians’ whole season. The San Diego Padres will evidently still take some time to slowly find their way back; Ruprecht and company are not keeping up yet. Ruprecht, like Cdr Riker, picked up a badge at 54.5%, while Auntie held on a little longer at 72%. Even so, of course, nothing was lost yet. The round’s curiosity was the shakily playing Kocour, who successfully held on for 13 rounds on the Edge of the Word (E!). The most balanced round was best played by Jooki, Paczessa, Kechup and Augustyn with 2 letters.

HELGA

If in the 1st round the rapid collecting of badges belonged to Ruprecht, the 2nd round was wrapped up very early this time by Kocour (50%), who over the course of the tournament travelled from table 1 all the way to table 3. Animais didn’t fare too well either, and the defending champions, Royal Vinohrady, began to have big trouble—Paul and Petra with badges, Schrott on the edge (E!), and here, after a poor 1st round, the gloom began to gather over the result. The best players of the round, with a single letter, were Maczka and Jooki.

Erich von STROM

Strom will go down in the history of Smoking Cat. After 9 (!) games the first to leave the table was the game’s greatest icon, Jooki, with a result of 44.4% – an absolutely unheard-of score – and we would be hard pressed to find a tournament in history where Jooki played below 75%, or indeed picked up a badge at all. Incredible, comparable to Alesh’s 0% in the final of Copo do Monteiro 2022. Incidentally, Kocour mentioned this moment at the tournament, but mistakenly believed that the 0 had already happened in the first round, so we set the record straight. (back then he lost Zaíce—ed. note)

Even with such a poor record, Jooki ultimately made it to the final, though he must have had his worries, as did the rest of KK Bílá Hora. Kechup also finished with a badge, and Anjelik too was hovering on the edge of the final six. Paradoxically, it was decided at the third table, where Kocour attempted a miraculous comeback, along with Anjelik and Augustyn, who was attacking him from a running seventh position. In the end, however, the table was long enough for neither Kocour nor Augustyn to help themselves against Anjelik; Ruprecht here drained his cup of badges, and Terra and Paul von Reichenberg met exactly the same fate. The best players of the round, with two letters, were Kocour, Maczka and Schrott.

The final six ended up looking as follows: 3x KK Bílá Hora (A Anjelik, B Kechup, D Jooki), 2x Midgard players (C Niti, E Maczka), and in seat F the Mongolian Paczessa.

And the card massacre began. First another final-table 0 (!)—Niti bows out after 5 games and the final is down to 5 players after just 7 games! The trio from KK Bílá Hora can turn to their next target. At a minimal cost of just three letters, they knock out Maczka in the 16th game and then Paczessa in the 18th.

In the final they play at almost 93% on average, Anjelik at 100%, matching Royal Vinohrady’s absolute total. You simply can’t play it any better.

This is the sixth title in a row for a Czech team. Behind the victorious KK Bílá Hora came silver medallists Midgard, and the bronze was claimed by Mongolia’s Dashinchilen.
